João Vasco Paiva

João Vasco Paiva

João Vasco Paiva (born 1979, Coimbra, Portugal) is a Hong Kong based installation and media artist.[1]

Biography

João Vasco Paiva taught at the City University of Hong Kong School of Creative Media and Hong Kong Art School (RMIT) University. His background is in painting and media technology. He graduated from Porto Art School (E.S.A.P.) and obtained a Master in Fine Arts in Creative Media, School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.[2]

Work

Paiva's work deals with the complexities of nature and its representation. The artists stated: "All of my work is about trying to find random patterns within nature, to then use as an ordered structure."[3][4] The artist has "an interest in deconstructing complex urban environments to create a set of identifiable codes."[5] His work "addresses the 'non-places' of the city as proposed by anthropologist Marc Augé. These locations often of a purely functional purpose, such as Hong Kong's MTR stations, parking lots, and the backs of high-rise buildings, are taken for granted by local residents, but have captured the attention of the artist," noted Zoe Li.[6]

João Vasco Paiva's work is shown internationally. Most recently the Orient Foundation in Macau hosted "Cast Away" together with Edouard Malingue Gallery, the artist's first solo show in Macau showing a set of paintings (including Cast Away IV, 2014) and a new film, "Untitled" (2014) that "explores the blurred boundary between the archipelago’s urbanised territory and its natural surroundings."[7][8]

At the end of 2013, João Vasco Paiva had a solo show in Hong Kong at Edouard Malingue Gallery titled "Near and Elsewhere" that "reconsiders from an aesthetic perspective the objects and entities that metropolitan citizens collectively create, form and use to subsequently neglect or discard." This show released sculptural installations including "Untitled (Lumberyard Array 3)" (2013) and "A Brief Moment in Time I" (2013). He also released a film, "Threshold" (2013), "shot in the commercial and congested areas of Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok and Causeway Bay [in Hong Kong], shows clips of eye-level landscape, blanked of all pieces of text so that all advertising is removed from vision.[9][10]

Paiva had a solo exhibition in May 2013, "Objects Encrypted" at Goethe-Gallery in Hong Kong. The artists stated, "When I first moved to Hong Kong, what impressed me most is not the high-rise buildings in Central or Admiralty but the buildings that are already old."[11] Other work includes "Palimpseptic" (2011) at Saamlung Gallery, "Decelarator" (2011) with Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten, "Chirps" (2010), and "Experiments on the Notation of Shapes" (2010).[12]

His work is written about in Artsy,[13] Timeout Hong Kong,[14] Digicult,[15] ArtAsiaPacific,[16] Blouin Art Info,[17][18] and Randian.[19]

Most recent

At Art Basel HK in March 2015, Joao Vasco Paiva showed the "most noteworthy" artwork of the event.[20] Artnet stated, "Up and coming local artists made an impression this year. Their works are affordable with great potential for market growth. Hong Kong-based João Vasco Paiva participated in the Encounters section with his 341 x 341 x 559 cm sculpture “Mausoleum," a mountain of stone resin casted styrofoam boxes with an HK$1 million ($141,633) price tag." Smaller pieces of this work were confirmed to be sold at the art fair.[21]

João Vasco Paiva is represented by Edouard Malingue Gallery.[22]

He currently resided in Hong Kong.[23]
