Joan Larsen is an American judge and lawyer. She was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Gov. Rick Snyder on September 30, 2015, to replace Justice Mary Beth Kelly, whose resignation from the Court became effective October 1, 2015.[1]

Education

Larsen is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law,[1] where she graduated first in her class.[2] While at Northwestern, she served as Articles Editor of the Northwestern University Law Review.

Law career

Larsen has been a professor at the University of Michigan School of Law since 1998. She clerked for David B. Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court. She was assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel from January 2002 to May 2003.[3]

On October 1, 2015, she was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Gov. Rick Snyder.[1] She will have to stand for election on November 8, 2016, to fill the remainder of Kelly's unexpired term, which runs through the end of 2018.[4]
