John Ashton (composer)

John Ashton (1830 – 25 December 1896) was a Welsh musician from Montgomeryshire. He began his career as a shoemaker, but injury prevented him continuing in the occupation and he joined the police force. An enthusiastic musician and composer, he wrote a number of songs and hymns, including, ‘Trefeglwys’ (1857) found in Llyfr Tonau Cynulleidfaol, Caniadau y Cysegr a'r Teulu, and Cerddor yr Ysgol Sabothol. There are also a number of his songs and part-songs in 'Miwsig y Miloedd'. In 1874 he emigrated to New Zealand, where he died, aged about 66.^[1]
