Controversy

Many recipients of the award have been criticized by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith or US Bishops' Conference Committee on Doctrine, including Richard McBrien,[1] Elizabeth Johnson,[2] Peter Phan,[3] Margaret Farley.[4] and Charles Curran.[5] The main reason for the criticism was an alleged lack of conformity to the fullness of Catholic orthodoxy.
