John Henry Sevier
John Henry Sevier, popularly called Captain Sevier, was a direct disciple of Swami Vivekananda. Together with his wife Charlotte Sevier, he founded the Advaita Ashrama in Mayavati in the Almora district of Himalayas, in 1898. He accompanied Swami Vivekananda from England to India in 1897 when the latter returned to India from his mission in the west.
Meeting with Vivekananda
Capt. Sevier was a non-commissioned officer in the British army. He and his wife Charlotte met Swami Vivekananda in 1896 when the latter was in London teaching the philosophy of Vedanta. In their very first meeting Swamiji had addressed Charlotte as mother and requested them to come to India for his work, which they readily agreed to do.[1]
