Major General Sir John Raynsford Longley KCMG CB (1867 – February 1953) was a British Army officer who reached high command during World War I.
Military career
Educated at Cheltenham College,[1] Longley was commissioned into the East Surrey Regiment in 1887 and served in the Second Boer War.[2] He was appointed Commanding Officer of 1st East Surreys and went to France in August 1914 at the start of World War I and fought in the Battle of Mons, Battle of Le Cateau, Battle of the Marne, Battle of the Aisne, Battle of La Bassée and Battle of Armentières.[1] He was appointed Commander of 82nd Infantry Brigade early in 1915 and General Officer Commanding 10th (Irish) Division in December 1915[3] before becoming General Officer Commanding the 44th Home Counties Division in 1919 before retiring in 1920.[2]
He was recalled at the start of World War II and served in Dover Garrison.[1]
