John Allen-Petrie GOM also known as John Petrie and by his birth name Jean-Michel Pitre[1] (born July 1980, Quebec, Canada) is the current Rouge Croix Pursuivant at the College of Arms in London.[2]
Biography
Petrie was educated at the Paris Institute of Political Studies where he received a diploma in Political Science.[3] Later he studied at the LSE where he received a MSc.[3] He works as a Senior Analysts at the Statistics and Regulatory Data Division of the Bank of England.[4]
Petrie served as a research assistant to William Hunt, Windsor Herald, and in 2013 was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant.[2] He is a genealogist[3] and since 2015 an adviser to the Chancery of the national orders in Antigua and Barbuda although it is unclear if he remains in post.[5]
Petrie is a Freeman of the City of London.[3] and stood for election in February 2014 as a Common Councilman of the City of London for the Castle Maynard ward. He lost the election.[6]
Honours
Petrie has been honoured by the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda who awarded him the use of a colonial uniform and in pictures Petrie is shown wearing insignia [5] such as
- Antigua and Barbuda - Honorary Grand Officer of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit
- Antigua and Barbuda - Governor General Gold Medal of Honour
- Antigua and Barbuda - Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal
There has been some public media comment in the Antiguan national media concerning when these awards were granted to Petrie as no public statement has been issued to date by the Antiguan Government in this regard.[5] An enquiry purportedly under the Freedom of Information Act was made in January 2015 to the College of Arms in the UK seeking clarification on this matter but it has been clarified that the College of Arms is not subject to such requests.[7] It has been reported in the Antiguan media that Petrie has resigned or been removed from his post as adviser to Government House in 2016.[5]
Heraldry
In 2011 Allen-Petrie was unusually assigned three difference coats of arms under his birth name of Jean-Michel Pitre, as part of a series of grant of arms made by the Chief Herald of Canada for his father and both his maternal grandparents there by allowing him to incorporate all three into his own Coat of Arms.[8] A link to those arms can be found at the Canadian Heraldic Authority.[9]
Personal life
He is unmarried and has no children.[3]
