Joking Hazard
Joking Hazard is an unreleased party game by the creators of Cyanide & Happiness. The aim of the game is to create a comic strip based on a randomly dealt hand of cards containing several panels taken from the Random Comic Generator. The game is similar in nature to Cards against Humanity in that the aim is to create a humorous scenario using a selection of seemingly unrelated entities.
The project launched on the crowdsourcing site Kickstarter on 9 February 2016,[1] and was fully funded within half an hour.[2]
History
Following the success of the Cyanide & Happiness web-comic and show, Explosm, the creators of Cyanide & Happiness, produced the Random Comic Generator.
After some weeks spent using the Random Comic Generator, the members of Explosm printed a number of the panels with the intention of playing a Cards against Humanity-style game with them.[3] According to Explosm, "it worked really, really well."[4]
Kickstarter Campaign
The Kickstarter campaign for Joking Hazard began on February 9, 2016 and reached its goal in about 27 minutes.[2]
Within an hour of its release, 'Level 1 Stretch Goals' were added to the campaign. These consisted of 10 'achievements,' of which 7 must be completed to reward backers of $25 or more. The 'Level 1' reward was an exclusive 10 card booster pack bundled with each copy of the game.[5] Within 5 hours, the campaign had "raised more than $134,000."[6] Backers continued to support the project, and funding surpassed $300,000 by the next day.[7] The campaign ended on March 11, 2016, raising a grand total of $3,246,589 USD.[8]
Rules
To play you need at least four people. While playing everyone takes turns laying down cards. Details below:
- Everyone draws seven cards. You should always have seven cards. Draw more when you don't.
- The deck plays first. The judge picks the first panel blindly from the top of the draw pile.
- The judge plays second. The judge picks the second panel from his own hand and puts it on either side, in a way that makes some slight amount of sense.
- Eveyone else plays third. All the other players give the third panel, face down, to the judge.
- The judge picks a winner. The judge lays them down one at a time, and picks his favorite.
- And so on. The winning panel goes back to its owner for scorekeeping, the next person becomes judge, and the game continues until someone has three cards (or whatever score you wanna go for).
Red Panels
Red panels involve situations that characters cannot come back from, such as murder or dismemberment. They can only be played as the final panel of a comic.
Whenever a red panel is drawn and played from the deck as the start of a story, each player may trade in any current cards for new ones, and then play the two panel set-up for double points.
