JonArno Lawson is a writer who has published many books for children and adults. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario and raised in nearby Dundas. He now lives in Toronto, Ontario, with his wife and three children.[1]

Career and Education

Lawson has a BA in English Literature from McGill University. He is the author of about thirteen books for children and adults. He has given a large number of workshops in children's poetry, and taught children's poetry in the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program at Simmons College, Boston, and at iSchool at UBC.[2] He has been recognized for his nonsense poetry.

Recognition and Awards

Lawson has won The Lion And The Unicorn Award for Excellence in North American Poetry four times, in 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2014. The books were "Enjoy It While It Hurts," "A Voweller's Bestiary," "Black Stars In A White Night Sky," and "Down In The Bottom Of The Bottom Of The Box."[3] His book "The Man In The Moon-Fixer's Mask" was a finalist for this award in 2005.[3]

In 2010, Lawson’s book “Think Again” was a Quill & Quire Book of the Year Selection,[4] as well as a Junior Library Guild Selection.[5] In 2011, it was shortlisted for the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award.[6] That same year, Lawson’s book “This (And That Was That)” received an Alcuin Award,[7] and was shortlisted for the Stiftung Buchkunst “Best Book Designs From All Around The World” competition[8]

His piece "Horse Camp" won first prize or non-fiction in the Prism Journal contest in 2013,[9] and another piece, "Natalie" came first in a Grit-lit contest for fiction in 2012.

Lawson's book "A Voweller's Bestiary" won the bronze medal for the Moonbeam Award in 2008.[10] Another book, "Inside Out" was one of six recommended titles by the UK Book Trust for National Poetry Day, and was shortlisted for the CLPE children’s poetry award.[11]

In 2015, the French edition of Lawson’s wordless picture book “Sidewalk Flowers” won the Prix Libbylit in Belgium for best picture book.[12] “Sidewalk Flowers” also won the Governor General’s Award For Illustrated Children’s Books in 2015,[13] and was on the New York Times Best Illustrated Books List the same year.[14]
