The Piano

Jon Schmidt (born 1966) is an American pianist currently residing in Bountiful, Utah. He describes his style as "new-age classical."[1] He began songwriting at age 11.[2] To date, he has released eight albums and seven piano books containing transcriptions of original arrangements.

He is currently a member of the musical group The Piano Guys, along with Steven Sharp Nelson.[3]

His work is often described as new-age music with pop elements of hook and melody. His works were also featured on sample discs for the Iomega Hipzip Digital Audio Player with the pieces "Sacred Ground", "All of Me", and "Waterfall". His influences include Mannheim Steamroller, Billy Joel, Chopin, Schubert, and Bach.[4]

Personal life

Jon Schmidt was the fifth of five children. His parents, Werner and Lieselotte Schmidt, were German immigrants who came to the United States after World War II.[4] Schmidt received an early education in music.[2] Schmidt began composing at age 11 and taught piano lessons at age 16.[2]

In college, Schmidt was worried that his music career would not be successful. As a result, he studied English and planned to get an MBA.[2] After people persistently asked him to play the piano for them, he rented a concert hall to perform a concert. It was well-received by the audience, and he abandoned his plans for an MBA. [2]

Schmidt is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[5] One of his albums is a collection of hymns.[6] Schmidt has also worked with Peter Breinholt in producing music for Especially for Youth.[7]

Schmidt and his wife Michelle have 5 children.[2]
