Jonita Gandhi is an Indo-Canadian singer. Her songs received appreciations in 2011, and were attracted to music composers of Bollywood.[1][2] She sings primarily in Hindi and English, but also in Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, German, Italian and French.[3][4][5] Bollywood legend actor Amitabh Bachchan praised her as; "I agree with you entirely. Amazing lyrical quality."[6]
Personal life
Jonita Gandhi was born in New Delhi, India, but her parents moved to Canada and she grew up in Toronto. Her journey as a singer began as a young child singing and dancing around the house. Her father, a musician by hobby and an electronics engineer by profession, recognized her potential and encouraged her to sing. She first performed in 1996 at a gig at her father's show in Toronto on a Christmas event and the years to follow became prosperous for her. She completed her degrees in health science and business. She also received an internship at CIBC World Markets during her undergrad but the first passion for Gandhi was always singing, so music continued to run in background throughout her education. Gandhi has formal training in Western classical music and during her stay in India has taken up training in Hindustani classical singing.[3][2] She speaks fluent Hindi and Punjabi languages.[6]
Career
Gandhi started posting videos in collaboration with Aakash Gandhi and they went viral on internet. She has big hits on YouTube for covers of songs Someone Like You, Pani Da Rang, Tujhko Jo Paaya, Tum Hi Ho, Suhaani Raat, Yeh Honsla, and many others.[2] She has also performed in BC, Canada for songs like Aao Huzoor Tumko, Lag Ja Gale which are very famous. She has participated at concerts with Sonu Nigam which were located in various countries including Russia, UK, US and the Caribbean. After that, she decided to try her fortune in India. She started her career in the Bollywood music industry. Gandhi stepped into the world of playback singing with Vishal Shekhar in Chennai Express starring Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.[7] She continued her work in Bollywood with the movie Highway starring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt, singing the tracks Kahaan Hoon Main and Implosive Silence. Gandhi's work as a playback singer is not limited to film soundtracks as she has been featured in AR Rahman's album Raunaq as well.[1][4] Her association with Rahman continued with a backing vocal performance for the Mani Ratnam's Tamil film OK Kanmani.
