Argentinian-born composer, arranger, conductor, Jorge Calandrelli is a six-time Grammy Winner, who also holds 2 Oscar Nominations and 27 Grammy Nominations. Among other prestigious awards, ASMAC honored Jorge Calandrelli with the 2014 Golden Score Award for Arranging.
Most recent is Jorge's involvement on the new album "Cheek to Cheek" with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, for which he arranged and conducted all orchestral arrangements, as well as the “Great Performances” live show conducted for PBS at the Lincoln Center in New York just aired on the heels of the album release.
Upon completion of the Duets II album, Jorge reached a significant achievement, celebrating a 25-year association with the timeless Tony Bennett, which includes twelve recorded albums, six Grammy Nominations and two Grammy Awards won.
The album “Amore Infinito", produced and arranged for Plácido Domingo and the LSO by Maestro Calandrelli with original songs and lyrics by Pope John Paul II, has been recently re-released by Sony Classical, commemorating the Pope’s canonization. The album contains duets by Josh Groban, Katherine Jenkins, Andrea Bocelli, Vanessa Williams and Plácido Domingo Jr., as well as some original songs by Calandrelli.
Jorge Calandrelli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the youngest of six. Jorge's father, Matias Calandrelli, was a medical doctor, eminent chess player, president of the Chess Club of Argentina and a Lieutenant colonel physician for the Argentine Army. Jorge's mother, Nieves Solá Calandrelli, was the daughter of Juan E. Solá a prominent politician and early member of the Jockey Club of Argentina. Nieves was a wonderful classical pianist and of great support to Jorge thorough out his life and career; he regards her as an inspiration and cornerstone in his life.
Early on, Jorge toured Europe with his own quintet, but eventually decided to return to Buenos Aires to begin what was to be his formative musical training. There, he pursued studies in Piano with Guillermo Iscla, Harmony and Counterpoint with the renowned composer Carlos Guastavino, Composition with composer Roberto Garcia Morillo, Altered Harmony with Jacobo Fischer and master classes in Contemporary Composition with composer Gerardo Gandini. Along with completing his studies, Jorge performed as a professional pianist with his Jazz Trio, and arranged and conducted for major recording artists and record companies. Jorge became one of the top, most sought-after arrangers in Buenos Aires during that time.
In 1978 Jorge moved to the United States, where he is now considered one of the finest and most prolific arrangers in the Pop, Jazz, Latin, and Classical fields.
Jorge has worked and lived in Los Angeles since 1986. In 1987 Jorge married Marcia Hatcher, who has been closely involved with Jorge's career. The Calandrelli's divide their time between Los Angeles and their home in the Tehachapi Mountains, where they share a love of nature and wildlife.
Most Notable Concert Works
"Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra" premiered in numerous countries and singled out in Michael Roeder's book A History of the Concerto. "Escapade in D minor", commissioned and premiered by The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra for Arturo Sandoval, conducted by Maestro Calandrelli; "Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra" commissioned for pianist Tian Jiang, premiered by Tian Jiang and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra during their US Tour; "Piano Pieces" currently in its recording stage with pianist Sonya Belousova and "Diptych for Piano and Orchestra" currently in its final stage.

Additionally, Jorge Calandrelli worked as Executive Musical Director for The Concord Music Group for three years. Mr. Calandrelli continues to work independently with a wide variety of artists and projects as well as working on his own concert pieces. Jorge's passion for music includes young musicians and education. Mr. Calandrelli currently serves on the Advisory Board for ASMAC, as well as having served on the Board of Governors of NARAS.
