Jos Clijsters is Chairman of the Management Board of Belfius Bank and Insurance.
Education
Born in Louvain, Belgium, on 28 March 1950 and holder of a Master’s degree in Applied Economic Sciences (Marketing) from the Catholic University of Leuven (1973), Jos Clijsters postgraduate training involved enrolment on CEDEP’s general management course at Fontainebleau as well as various other international management seminars.
Start of professional career
His first professional position was with Unilever in 1974 in the Consumer Marketing Dry Foods department.
Banker
In 1981, he joined BNP Paribas Fortis Bank (formerly Fortis, and Generale Bank before that), where he managed marketing development at all levels. From 1990 to 1995, he was General Marketing Manager for individuals, professionals and SMEs and also set up a life assurance company. In 1995, he set up the Banque de la Poste, a joint venture between Generale Bank and the Belgian Post Office, and became the company’s first CEO. In 1999, he went back to Fortis Group, this time to retail marketing; he also oversaw the merger between Generale Bank and the Caisse Générale d'Epargne et de Retraite .
In 2002, he became CEO of the Fortis Retail Network in Belgium. Under his leadership, retail department results for Belgium soared from €15m to €400m; he also implemented a new client-focused retail strategy.
In 2005, he became a member of both the Executive Committee at Fortis [1] and of the Management Committee at Fortis Bank, and also became global head of retail activities (16 000 FTE, €1 billion of after-tax profit – including ALM – and €4.5 billion in top line). As CEO Retail Banking he developed the bank’s activities abroad and managed acquisitions in Poland,[2] Turkey, Ireland[3] and Germany.[4] When he left Fortis at the end of 2007, he was CEO Retail Banking 2007. Jos Clijsters resigned from the Fortis Bank’s Board of Directors in January 2009.[5]
Up until 2009, he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Fortis Bank Polska SA[6] and Fortis Bank Turkey.
He joined Dexia Group as adviser to the Management Board in January 2011.
On 5 September 2011, he became Chairman of the Management Board and Director of Dexia Bank Belgium,[7][8][9] known, as of 1 March 2012, as Belfius Bank and Insurance.[10][11]
Other
For a number of years, he was also Chairman of the Belgian Marketing Foundation.
He is currently Chairman of the University College Leuven association[12] (a KUL offshoot) and Member of the General Council of Vlerick Leuven Ghent Management school.[13]
Clijsters received on April 28, 2016 the Stima Lifetime Achievement Award as an appreciation for his achievements in the marketing domain.[14]
