Joseph Bernard Cotter

Joseph Bernard Cotter (November 19, 1844 – June 28, 1909) was the first Roman Catholic bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Winona, in Winona, Minnesota.[1]

Born in Liverpool, England, Cotter was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on May 3, 1871. On November 15, 1889, Pope Leo XIII appointed Cotter the first bishop of the Winona Diocese. On December 27, 1889, he was consecrated; he died while he was still bishop.[2]

Legacy

Cotter High School, in Winona, was named in his memory.[3]
