Joe Toney

Joe Toney (born 1946) is an American former basketball player for Seton Hall University, in South Orange, New Jersey.[1] Toney currently lives in Newark, New Jersey, United States.[2]

Relationship with Shaquille O'Neal

Toney is the biological father of professional basketball player Shaquille O'Neal.[3]After Toney struggled with drug addiction and was imprisoned, Toney was out of Shaquille's life when Shaquille O'Neal was six months old.[4] Toney played basketball against O'Neal's stepfather, Phillip Harrison, and subsequently agreed to give up parental rights to his son.[5] Toney appeared on the Ricki Lake show in an attempt to re-establish relations with his son.[5] O'Neal went on to record a song "Biological Didn't Bother,"[3] whilst stating that his father did not exist to him.[6] Toney has now given up trying to re-establish a relationship with his son. [7]

Personal life

He was an All-State Guard in high school.[8] It was during high school that he began to use illicit drugs,[9] which ultimately ended his career in basketball.[10] Toney was sent to prison in Lexington, Kentucky on federal check fraud charges.[11][12] He has three children, Joseph,[13] Shaquille O'Neal,[14] and Emanual.[15] All three sons have met in passing.[16] Toney currently works as a social worker.[14]
