A total number of 23 women competed in this event, limited to judoka whose body weight was less than, or equal to, 48 kilograms. Competition took place on 1996-07-26 in the Georgia World Congress Center.[1]
Kye Sun-Hui surprised spectators by winning gold. She had obtained a wildcard entry to the Games, and was virtually unknown on the international stage.[2]
