Julie-Ann Russell (born 28 March 1991) is an Irish footballer who plays for the Irish women's national team and Women's National League club UCD Waves. Julie-Ann, a winger or forward, is the sister of Sligo Rovers midfielder John Russell.

Club career

Russell began her soccer career with Salthill Devon , and scored an extra–time winner in the 2007 Under 16 FAI Cup final.[1] The following week Russell helped Galway win the 2007 FAI Women's Cup. [2] The victory ensured that Galway and Russell qualified for the 2008–09 UEFA Women's Cup.[3]

In 2010 Russell featured as Salthill Devon played in the FAI Cup final, but were defeated 4–2 by Peamount United.[4] While attending the University of Limerick, she also played intravarsity soccer and futsal.[5] Russell also represented both Galway and Connacht as a Ladies Gaelic footballer.

Russell signed a contract with W-League club Los Angeles Strikers in April 2011.[6] In August 2011, she played for Peamount United in the 2011–12 UEFA Women's Champions League.[7]

In January 2012 Russell signed for FA WSL club Doncaster Rovers Belles. She combined playing with an off–field role, fulfilling the work placement element of her marketing degree at the University of Limerick.[8] In April 2012 Russell was appointed as one of eight WSL digital media ambassadors, one from each team, who wore their Twitter account name on their shirt sleeves to raise the profile of the league.[9] In July 2012 Russell left Doncaster and returned to Ireland to complete her studies, signing for Peamount.[10]

International career

Russell represented the Republic of Ireland women's national football team at Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 level.[11] She was named FAI Under 19 Women's Player of the Year in 2010.[12] She was named FAI Senior Women's International Player of the year 2014.

Russell's senior international debut came in October 2009, when she came on as a half–time substitute for Marie Curtin in Kazhakstan during a 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification - UEFA Group 6 game. She created Ireland's equalising goal in their 2–1 win.[13]

Personal life

Russell's footballing brother John has been a major inspiration throughout her own soccer career:

“ We would be very close and he would have got me into football. We speak nearly every day and we would talk to each other after games about how we have done. He's been a great help to me. ”

She completed a Master's degree in Marketing at University College Dublin (UCD) in 2014.[14]
