Jungli Incident
The Jungli Incident (Chinese: 中壢事件; pinyin: Zhōnglì Shìjiàn) refers to an election fraud in 1977, which occurred in Zhongli, Taoyuan County (now Zhongli District, Taoyuan City), Taiwan.
Background
The incident was attributed to the election of the Taoyuan County Magistrate due to Kuomintang (KMT)'s fraud election in favor of KMT representative. Thousands of Jungli residents surrounded the Jungli Police Station arsenal and vandalized the police station. This rebellion caused the death of one College Student of the National Central University.
Aftermath
In the end, Hsu Hsin-liang with 220,000 votes was elected as the Taoyuan county-leader, the original KMT appointed representative was then punished for the event to try and bring calm.[1]
The Jungli incident was one of the largest rebellions against KMT during its monopoly rule, before the Kaohsiung Incident which took place on 10 October 1979.
