Juraj Valcuha
Juraj Valcuha, born in 1976 in Bratislava in Slovakia, is a conductor. Juraj Valcuha has been the music director of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra since November 2009.
He studied composition and conducting in Bratislava, St. Petersburg with Ilya Musin, and Paris.
2005 saw his debut with Orchestre National de France, and in subsequent seasons he has regularly conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra, Munich, and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Swedish Radio Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, and Orchestre de Paris. In the U.S. he has made debuts with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and National Symphony Orchestra.
In the 2011–12 season he debuted with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestras. With the RAI Orchestra he has led tours to the Musikverein in Vienna and the Philharmonie in Berlin. In 2012–13 he debuted with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, and National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa.
His 2014–15 engagements include returns to the San Francisco, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras and the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, as well as debuts with Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. On the operatic stage, he conducts productions of Wagner’s Parsifal with the Hungarian State Opera, Puccini’s Turandot at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, and Janáček’s Jenufa at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna.
In 2015–16 he will return to the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras, Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia London, Orchestre de Paris, Czech Philharmonic, and HR and NDR radio symphony orchestras in Frankfurt and Hamburg.
