KCHUNG is a freeform radio station in the Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. KCHUNG broadcasts over 200 shows a month on 1630 AM and online through the station's website.[1] It isn’t a typical community station, nor is it an LPFM. The station also doesn’t have a license, but it’s not a pirate station. Instead it operates according to what are generally known as the Part 15 rules, which cover very low-power RF transmissions without a license.[2]
History
KCHUNG has hosted many artists, musicians, poets, and has a reputation for hosting programming that might not be allowed on other stations.[3] While KCHUNG now has a stable location, it continues its nomadic beginnings broadcasting at locations around Los Angeles including LACMA, The Smell, Ooga Booga, Public Fiction, Night Gallery, Pehr Space, MOCA and the LA Anarchist Bookfair.[4][5][6][7]
Notable Shows
Some notable shows include Mark Foster's FOS FM[8][9] Jennifer Moon's Adventures Within,[10] Max Maslansky's Riffin, and Yelena Zhelezov's Tractor.[11] Chrysanthe Oltmann has a feminist/comedy show called Vajammin. Michael Piña's science show, Nature Boy.[12] Other shows hosted by Laura Owens, Brendan Fowler, Fiona Connor, Simon Leung, A.L. Steiner, Guru Rugu, and music supervisor Alison Rosenfeld.[13][11]
