KZD-85
KZD-85 is a UAV system made by Farner AG Grenchen. Today is the aerospace enterprise RUAG Aviation responsible for it. KDZ -85 stays for the German words “Klein Ziel Drohne” 1985. Small Target drone (first interduced 1985).
Operation
The KZD-85 UAV uses a compact launcher for takeoff. A parachute-based landing system enables the UAV to land nearly anywhere, also gliding landings on grass or, on snow is practiced by strong wind.
It is used as training target (just aim, not shoot) for the Oerlikon 35 mm twin cannon, the FIM-92 Stinger and now also for the Rapier missile.
There are no sensors built in. Hits are be determined only by the surface reflection of the laser (laser from the target device).
Operators
The KZD-85 system is in service with the Swiss Air Force from 1985 and is still in use today. There are no plans for retire it or for a replacement of it.
