Career

Her contribution to the Bhojpuri music, as well as her instrumental role bringing forth the girls and women from the remote villages out to chase their dreams. She has served as a role model for active involvement for both the Bhojpuri traditional folk forms and Bhojpuri film music. She has transformed the Bhojpuri singing art from a small regional industry to the full fledged high quality vocal art in the International front. Her invaluable work in MTV Coke Studio 2014 and 2015 repeatedly proves this. She is the first Bhojpuri singer to present an age old tradition of Khadi Birha tradition to the International platforms with world renowned musicians. Her decade long service to Bhojpuri music has served multiple terms, though she was born far away from the Bhojpurian North Indian society. Although, she is Assamese, yet Kalpana Patowary has been very active in Bhojpuri music, who has tirelessly served for both Uttar Pradesh – Bihar and Assam. Her proactive approach has helped the Bhojpuri music grow in both scope and recognition.

CHHAPRAHIYA PURVI

Kalpana is the first woman to record and sing the Chhaprahiya Purvi style with her commendable high pitch vocal. “The day I decided that I was going to sing this Purvi folk form, being a woman I was challenged by my inner being. No woman had ever dared to sing this particular Chhaprahiya style of Purvi folk music as it demands a high octave range.” Without compromising on the conventional and traditional value of Chhaprahiya Purvi, she has continued to add interesting innovations. Kalpana interprets the Chhaprahiya Purvi as per her own perception within the traditional framework. Until she set her foot on the scene, Purvi was a male preserve. But today she commands the art form as if she were the one to engender it. Not only she has given a new vigor to Purvi, she has also enriched it with a word of fresh interpretation. In 2004, for the first time in Bhojpuri recording musical history, Devra Tudi Killi from album Pyar Ke Rog Bhayil released from T Series was an experimentation to record it in a Female voice as it needs High octave vocal range to render. Years later the song becomes a history itself.

BHOJPURI CINEMA

The best-selling female artist of all time - Kalpana Patowary has made an indelible impact on the Bhojpuri music industry and audiences everywhere. Blessed with a stunning five-octave range and signature vocal abilities, the singularly talented singer continues to reach new heights of artistic growth and popularity. As a singer, she has been recognized with Bhikhari Thakur Samman, Swar Kokila, Swar Samragee , Bhojpuri Swar Mallika, Bhojpuri Sewa Samman, Bhojpuri Sangam Samman, Panchamrit Samman, Atkrista Gayak Samman, Bhojpuri Queen to name a few. Released in 2003, Gawanwa Leja Rajaji strongly resonated with audiences, becoming that year's best-selling album in India. Kalpana broke milestones with the album which opened the Bhojpuri Music Industry in India. Kalpana Patowary is the uncrowned empress of playback singing of Bhojpuri cinema. The subject of Bhojpuri music and cinema is incomplete without mentioning her name.

Her first Bhojpuri film for which she sang was “SAIYA SE KARDA MILANWA HEY RAM” and the second was GANGA JAISAN MAI HAMAR. But the 3rd film really turned to be a milestone and once again it established an industry – yes, SASURA BADA PAISAWALA. Bhojpuri Cinema was revolutionised by Sasura Bada Paisewala. Made with a budget of Rs. 30 lakhs, the film collected a gross earning of over Rs. 25 crore. Hereafter, there was no looking back for the Bhojpuri film industry. From that time till now Bhojpuri film industry has evolved so much that now it has become a global industry. Item songs are a big part of Bhojpuri movies; sometimes they are bigger and more popular than the actual story. SASURA BARA PAISA WALAE’s seductive item dance number was one amongst them and the song was written by Vinay Bihari which got very good response. The two duo have given many a hit songs like ‘Man ke Sawaria’, ‘Dil ke Dhardkan’, ‘Balamji’, “Suna Pardes Balam”,”Rasgulla”,”Pani Bhare Gaine Rama”,etc.

" Music barons in India were left gaping when Kalpana Patowary, a singer of Indian folk music, was signed on by British recording company Virgin EMI Records in April. They were all the more surprised to see the soaring international demand for her Bhojpuri music album with songs about migration. It seems Bhojpuri folk songs on migration are witnessing resurgence on an unexpected scale."
