Kamal Uddin (Bengali: কামাল উদ্দিন; born 28 June 1984) is an English Nasheed[1][2][3][4] singer-songwriter, Imam and teacher of Bangladeshi descent.

Early life

Uddin was born in England and he grew up in Hyde, Greater Manchester. His parents, Malkas Ali and Sufia Ali, are from Bangladesh. He has two brothers; Faisal and Khairul Uddin.[5]

Uddin started school at Greenfield Primary School and then studied at Hyde Technology School. In summer 1996, he boarded Al Jamia-Al Islamiyya Islamic School in Bolton, and studied a course to memorise the Qur'an. At the end of 2001, he finished his course and became a qualified Hafiz. In September 2002, he boarded Jamia Al-Karam in East Retford to study Arabic grammar.[6]

Career

Since 2004, Uddin has been a teacher and Imam at Hyde Jamia Mosque, where he teaches young children about Islam by singing Nasheeds,[6][7] and he has a separate Hafiz class, teaching people to memorise the Qur'an.[5]

In August 2005, Uddin's debut album In the Name of Allah was released.[6] In December of the same year, he performed at the first Global Peace and Unity Event in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in London.[8][9] In May 2006 his second album Illallah,[10] produced by Ahmad Hussain, was released.[11][12]

In September 2008, after winning the Islam Channel Nasheed Contest presented by Rakin Misbah from Mecca2Medina, Uddin performed at the Global Peace and Unity Event in October 2008.[13][14][15][15]

Uddin has taken part in many performances throughout the UK and is now working closely with IQRA Promotions on new projects, including his third album[16] along with a Nasheed video.[17]

Personal life

In November 2000, Uddin's father died.[5] In January 2005, Uddin and his mother performed Hajj (the largest Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia).[18]

In August 2006, Uddin got married. He lives in his hometown of Hyde with his wife, Roushonara Begum, and two daughters, Hannah Maariah (born 2009) and Naseehah (born 2013).[5]
