Kanavaney Kankanda Deivam is a 1955 Tamil Fantasy film was directed by T. R. Raghunath and produced by Pattanna. The film script was written by K. V. Srinivasan, Umachandran, V. Sadha Sivabramnam. Music by Hemanth Kumar and A. Rama Rao assets to movie. The film starring Gemini Ganesan, Anjali Devi, Lalitha played lead with M. N. Nambiar, T. P. Muthulakshmi, Friends Ramaswamy, Chittoor V. Nagaiah. The film was remade in Hindi as Devta (1956) and in Malayalam as Nagamadathu Thampuratti (1982). This film was the first South Indian film to be shot in colour (partly in Geva Color) after a Kannada movie Stree Ratna (1954). The movie ran for 100 days at many centers.[1][2][3]
Plot
The king Soora Simmahar(Chittoor V. Nagaiah), who lose his sight and need a "Naga Jothi"(Serpent light) found in Sarpalokam(Serpent World). A Young man Vijayan(Gemini Ganesan) working in palace and in love with the princess Nalini(Anjali Devi) undertakes the hazardous journey of going to the nether world and getting the magic light from the hood of the snake in the custody of the Serpent Queen Naga Rani(Lalitha). The queen is attracted to the young man, who pretends to be in love with her mainly to get the light. He succeeds in getting it and the queen curses him to become an ugly man. The princess marries the ugly man, but they are bainshed and live in a hut. Soon boy is born. The devoted wife takes many trials and tribulations before she and her son help her husband regain his original form. And they live happily there after.[1]
Production
Bhanumathi who gained fame with B. N. Reddi's Swargaseema (1945) was cast in this film and a song "Unnai kann theduthey" was first rendered by Bhanumathi and the sequence was shot when she chose to walk out of the film.[1] Lalitha was cast as a vamp and initially she was brought on board after production commenced, as a substitute for P. Bhanumathi. Others in the cast included M. N. Nambiar, V. Nagaiah, M. N. Rajam, T. P. Muthulakshmi and 'Friend' Ramasami. Gemini Ganesan disguised himself as a beggar and approached producer Narayana Iyengar who was so impressed that he gave him the role in the film.[4] This film had a coloured scene in the climax of the films.

Music composed by A. Rama Rao and Hemant Kumar. Lyrics written by Papanasam Sivan, V. Seetha Raman, K. V. Srinivasan, Ku. Ma. Balasubramaniam and Hemanth Rao. The film had melodious music and some songs become hit, the most popular being Unnai Kann Theduthey...In this film a song filmed later Lalitha, "Unnai Kann Theduthey"... was first rendered by P. Bhanumathi and the sequence was shot when she close to walk out of the film. This song P. Suseela is still fondly remembered by Tamil movie buff.(Bhumathi told this writer years later that in the song recorded with P. Suseela, the hiccups were hers. This was one of Suseela's early hits as playback singer).[1][6][7]
