The 12081/12082 Kannur ‘’’Jan Shatabdi Express’’’ is a Jan Shatabdi express train belonging to Indian Railways that runs between Thiruvananthapuram & Kannur in Kerala state of India. There is a huge demand to cover this into a daily train.

History

The ’’Jan Shatabdi Express’’’ via Kottayam was introduced in 2011.[1] Initially the train was running between Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. In 2013 the train was extended to Kannur.

Significance

The train is the fastest express train(via Kottayam) connecting the three megacities of Kerala-Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. The Jan Shatabdi express train covers the state capital Thiruvananthapuram and commercial hub Kochi in 3 hours 42 minutes which makes it the fastest train running via Kottayam rail route in Kerala state covering these two cities. The train is one among the popular commuter trains in Kerala state along with its counterpart, the 12075/76 Kozhikode-Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi Express(which runs via Alappuzha). This is the second fastest train in Kerala which connects the 6 largest cities in Kerala-Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kollam and Kannur, after the Thiruvananthapuram-Delhi Rajdhani Express.

There is a huge demand to convert this into a daily train, both for convenience of travellers and to increase revenue from the train. Currently, railways suffers severe loss in its earnings. The loss accumulated is much more than the estimated cost of a pitline to be constructed in Kannur. So the construction of the pitline could definitely increase their earnings and more trains could be scheduled from Kannur.

Coach Composition

The train consists of 14 second class seating coaches and 2 AC Chair car coaches.

Time Table

The 12081 Kannur-Trivandrum Central Jan Shatabdi Express leaves Kannur at 04:45 AM and reaches Trivandrum Central at 13:45 PM. It covers the 502 km distance in 9 hours. In return the 12082 Trivandrum Central - Kannur Jan Shatabdi Express leaves Trivandrum Central at 14:20 PM and reaches Kannur at 23:30 PM.
