Karen Duggan (born 29 May 1991) is an Irish international footballer who plays for UCD Waves of the Women's National League (WNL). She made her debut for the Republic of Ireland women's national football team in March 2013.

Club career

In September 2010 Duggan scored twice in Tramore's 3–0 Waterford Ladies Cup final win over Joinville, to secure a regional league and Cup double.[2] Duggan joined Peamount United before the Women's National League (WNL) was formed in 2011 and represented the club in the competition's first season. She had already featured in The Peas' 2011–12 UEFA Women's Champions League campaign, which ended with defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.[3]

When Peamount manager Eileen Gleeson quit for UCD Waves in 2014, Duggan was one of several Peamount players who followed Gleeson to her new club.

International career

As a Piltown Ladies player, Duggan represented Ireland at Under 17 and Under 19 level.[4] In February 2009 she was named Football Association of Ireland (FAI) Under 19 Women's Player of the Year.[5]

Duggan was included in a scholarship programme for potential senior national team players in December 2011.[6] She made her debut for the senior team at the 2013 Cyprus Cup, in the 1–0 win over South Africa. In Ireland's unsuccessful 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification campaign, Duggan secured a regular place in the defence and contributed to the team's run of four consecutive clean sheets.[7]

Gaelic games

Duggan has also played camogie for Piltown GAA and represented Kilkenny GAA up to minor level,[8] including at the 2009 All-Ireland Minor Camogie Championship final.

Personal life

In 2014 Duggan was employed as a science teacher in Coláiste Chriost Rí in Portlaoise. She had graduated from the University of Limerick.[9]
