Karki (name)

The Karki is a Chhetri surname in Nepal and Rajput cast of North India. Karkis are also Masta, local non-vedic deity of Karnali region, worshipers. The name Karki means revenue officer derived from the word "Kar" meaning tax in Nepali. Karkis have always been an integral part of the Nepalese Army and have contributed significantly in the field of Law,Banking and Finance and other Government Services.

Among these Karkis, Mudulla, Sutar, Lama are mostly found while others are very rarely found. It is often heard that the Mudula karki inhabitant of western nepal do not celebrate the festival 'Laxmi pooja'.[1]

Karki (Sutar) are the Chettri people of Nepal who are descended from Khas family belonging to Aryan race having . They are believed to be offspring of sage Ghritakaushik which is also their gotra

Origin of Sutar karki

Khas Empire is one of the Empire in Nepalese history formed under Malla Kings in Western Nepal. During the regime of King 'Jitaridev' in Khas Empire 'Jayabidhyadhar Pundit' son of Bagavan Bhaskar Pundit (Royal Priest) was appointed as administrator and advisor to royal throne. Later After the death of Jayabidhadhar Pundit there occurs huge dispute on appointing next administrative head of Empire. This disputes leads towards groupism among bharadaars of palace. Knowing the internal conflict King Akshay son of King 'JitariDev' divide the administrative power among all Bhardaars. As the result Jasodhar Karki (Jasu Pundit) 2nd son of Jayabidhadhar Pundit was appointed on administrative post ' Karki ' of SutarKot of famous Khas Empire. After being appointed as Karki of Sutarkot Jasu Pundit adopt the Surname Karki and become Jasodhar Karki and his generation today is known as Karki (Sutar)

Karkis in India

In India Karki Rajputs are found in Uttarakhand, Punjab and Rajasthan etc. In Uttarakhand they basically reside in pithoragarh and sparsely in Almora region. Karkis in Uttarakhand were migrated from Chittorgarh of Rajasthan during medieval period. Karkis of Nepali origin are also found in Dehradun and other parts of India as well. In fact, the Indian National movement boasts of these ethnic Karkis from Kumaon who formed a great role in the national movement. more places in west Bengal they living .
