Kastamonu Governor's Office

Kastamonu Governor's Office (Turkish: Kastamonu Valilik Binası) is the main service building of the governor (vali) of Kastamonu Province, Turkey.

Geography

The building has been situated on a low hill overlooking the city to the north west at 41°22′33″N 33°46′43″E / 41.37583°N 33.77861°E / 41.37583; 33.77861. It is on 10 Aralık street and close to the main square of Kastamonu.[1]

History

During the 19th century the office building of Kastamonu governor was a wooden building constructed in 1833. It was replaced by a newer building . The new building was constructed in 1900-1901 term during the Ottoman Empire era. Its architect was Vedat Tek whose father was previously a governor of Kastamonu. The building opening ceremony was held on 1 September 1902 which was the 26th anniversary of the Sultan Abdülhamit II's accession to throne.[2] The first governor to serve in the building was Enis Pasha.

The building

The building is considered an example of Turkish National Architecture Movement. It is 3 storey (ground and two upper floors) building with dimensions 50 x 20 m2(165 x 65 ft2) . Its outer appearance has some arabesque features. There is an elevated portal and two symmetrical staircases to the main entrance. Its building material is face stone.[3]
