Kathie Browne (born Jacqueline Katherine Browne; September 19, 1930 – April 8, 2003) was an American film and television actress. She was married for 34 years to the actor Darren McGavin.
Biography
Born in San Luis Obispo, California, she appeared in many films and television series. Among them were four roles on CBS's Perry Mason: title character and defendant Donna Loring Ross in the 1960 episode, "The Case of the Provocative Protégé", defendant Susan Fisher in the 1962 episode, "The Case of the Mystified Miner," murderer Carla Eden in the 1963 episode, "The Case of the Festive Felon", and defendant Lona Upton in the 1965 episode, "The Case of the Thermal Thief".[1]
Browne appeared in many other television series such as Sheriff of Cochise, Laramie, Hondo, Whispering Smith, Redigo, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Man from Blackhawk, Gunsmoke, and Rawhide. She portrayed Deela in the Star Trek episode "Wink of an Eye" (1968).[1]
Browne also appeared in episodes of Hazel, My Favorite Martian, The Wild Wild West, Ironside, Fantasy Island, The Rockford Files, The Love Boat, Sea Hunt, Ripcord, 77 Sunset Strip, Have Gun - Will Travel, The Real McCoys, Banacek, The Big Valley, and Kolchak: The Night Stalker, in which her husband Darren McGavin starred.[1]
After making guest appearances during the second and third seasons of Bonanza, Browne returned to the show in the fifth season in a different role: Laura Dayton, a widowed mother who is courted by Adam Cartwright (Pernell Roberts). The role was created with the expectation that Roberts would be leaving the series at the end of the season, allowing for his character to make a convenient exit. However, when Roberts unexpectedly renewed his contract for another year, the show's writers created a storyline in which Laura and Adam's cousin, Will Cartwright (played by Guy Williams) fall in love and leave to get married.
Death
A breast cancer survivor, Browne died of natural causes in 2003 in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 72.[2] She was survived by her husband, actor Darren McGavin, who died on February 26, 2006, and four step-children.[3]
