Ke Jie (Chinese: 柯洁; pinyin: Kē Jié; born August 2, 1997[1]) is a Chinese professional Go player.
Biography
Ke Jie was born in Lishui, Zhejiang, China in 1997. He started to learn Go in 2003 when he was 5 years old with Zhou Zongqiang (周宗强) and won his first national championship in 2007.
He became a pro in 2008 and was promoted to 9 dan in 2015.
In January 2015, Ke Jie won his first world title in the second Bailing Cup, defeating Qiu Jun in the Round of fifth.[2]
In December 2015, Ke Jie defeated Shi Yue in the 20th Samsung Cup.[3]
In January 2016, Ke Jie won the 2nd Mlily Cup, defeating famous South Korean Go player Lee Sedol in the Round of fifth.[4] The score was drawn at 2-2 with Lee winning games 1 and 4 and Ke claiming games 2 and 3. According to 9 dan South Korean professionals commenting on the final game, the result was unexpectedly hinged on 1/2 point kos and the counting system used. Under Japanese scoring, Lee would have won by 1/2 point, as Ke was 7 points ahead on the board, playing as black against a komi of 7.5 points. Ke filled a dame point to end a ko and win by 1/2 point under the Chinese scoring which applied.[4] However, this is misleadingly wrong since under Japanese scoring, the komi is 6.5 (as opposed to 7.5 in Chinese scoring) so Ke Jie would win by 0.5 points even under Japanese scoring rule since his black led white by 7 points without the dame.[5][6]
Ke Jie currently ranks first in Rémi Coulom's unofficial world ranking list.[7]
