History
This JR station opened as Baba Station when the railway extended from Kyoto to the lakeside port of ÅŒtsu on July 15, 1880. At this time, the stations en route were (from ÅŒtsu) Ishiba, Baba, Yamashina, ÅŒtani and Inari. When the last section of the TÅkaidÅ railway completed on July 1, 1889, the railway from the east connected at Baba, leaving the branch between Baba and ÅŒtsu. On June 1, 1913, ÅŒtsu Station and Baba Station were renamed as HamaÅtsu and ÅŒtsu. On August 1, 1921, the new route between ÅŒtsu and Kyoto was opened. New ÅŒtsu Station and Yamashina Station opened en route and the former ÅŒtsu Station became a freight terminal named Zeze. Zeze Station resumed passenger services on September 15, 1934.[1]
