Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Kanpur is a school situated in the IIT Kanpur campus, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in the year 1965 and is part of the Kendriya Vidyalaya system of schools. It has classes from nursery to XII.

In 1965, IIT Kanpur granted two bungalows for the establishment of the school with Shri D.S. Bajpai as the founder principal of the school. In the beginning, the total strength of the school was merely 60 and there were only 4 standards in which they could study, i.e. Class 6th to Class 9th. Now the school has grown to 7 standards, classes 6th to 12th, each of which have five sections each. Along with that, the school accommodates a secondary wing of buildings that conduct primary classes from 1st to 5th standard.[2]

Admissions

The admissions in Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Kanpur are based on the guidelines of KVS in India. There are different criteria for admissions in different classes.

For class 1st-8th, the criterion of admission depends upon the number of seats in the class. The preference is given to the children who belong to the SC/ST (schedule cast/schedule tribe) category so 25% of seats are reserved for that category. Then students belonging under general cast are considered for the admission. There is no test conducted for the admission so there is a first-come, first-served policy. In the peak time of admissions, lottery system is also considered to select the admission forms.[3]
For class 9th, the students are selected on the basis of examination conducted by the school itself. In this test, one has to score a minimum of 33% marks in every subject and then the students having maximum marks are given admission. Sometimes, the admission is based upon the number of students required in a given class. If the school has a deficit, then the cut-off percentage is lowered, else, the cut-off is high. Priority is given to SC/ST category. They have to score 25% of the total aggregate, then they are considered a priority for filling up the classes if they score equally with a student in general category.
For senior classes such as class 11th, the applying students are selected on the basis of their CGPA in class 10th. On the basis of CGPA, they get to decide their stream. If applicants have same CGPA then their grades of math and science are taken into consideration and if they have same grades in both the subjects then the person older in age according to his/her date of birth certificate is given admission.
