Kerkenkruis

The kerkenkruis in Utrecht

A kerkenkruis is in the Netherlands a couple of churches that form a cross on a map. Usually the Dutch think of the cross of churches in Utrecht which has the Utrecht Cathedral (the Dom) as its focal point, and the St. John's Church, St. Peter's Church, St. Pauls abbey, and St. Mary's Church as the north, east, south and west extremities respectively. These churches date from the Middle Ages, but the expression is younger. It is uncertain whether forming a cross was by accident or by intention of the builders.
