Khowar Academy (Urdu: کھواراکیڈمی) is an Khowar language organisation founded by Rehmat Aziz in 1996 in Karachi for the promotion of Khowar language spoken in Chitral, Swat, Ghizer(Gilgit-Baltistan) Pakistan Sheghnan(Afghanistan) and Xinjing(China) and Chatur (India). The organisation publishes Khowar, Urdu and English books, and supports research and creative work in Khowar linguistics and literature.[1]

Overview

The Khowar Academy promotes the Khowar culture through the development and promotion of the language and literature. It is located in Karachi, the City of Lights of the Sindh province of Pakistan.

It publishes books in Khowar, Urdu, English and other languages of Pakistan.[2]

The Academy is a non-profit, non-Government Chitrali Language Regulatory & Literary Organisation in Pakistan responsible for the standardisation, advancement and promotion of the Khowar language and other languages of Chitral, Kalash and Gilgit-Baltistan i.e. Khowar [3] Kalasha, Madaglashti, Yidgha, Palula, Dameli, Manji, Wakhi, Gojri, Farsi, Gawar-Bati, Dari, Pashto, Doomaki, Balti, Burushaski, Badeshi, Shina, Brahui[4] and Wakhi languages.[5]

Activities

Since its inception, the Khowar Academy has produced over 50 publications[6] in Khowar, Kalasha, Brahui, Balti, Urdu, Burushaski, Shina, Sindhi, Saraiki and Torwali languages of Northern Pakistan, which include local language primers, calligraphy book, children books, children dictionaries, poetry books, translation of Allama Iqbal’s books into khowar language, Conversation books, Grammars, khowar literature, Chitral Vision Newspaper, scientific works, translations, Khowar lexicon, research publications, booklets and local language keyboards. The academy maintains a large collection of manuscripts in khowar language.

Keyboard

Rehmat Aziz Chitrali, in collaboration with the academy, Wikimedia Foundation and others, has created a Virtual Keyboard for users of the Khowar language.[11]
