Killeen Independent School District

Killeen Independent School District is a public school district based in Killeen, Texas (USA).

In addition to Killeen, the district serves the cities of Harker Heights and Nolanville as well as all students residing at Fort Hood. The district covers western Bell County and a small portion of Coryell County.

In 2010, the school district was rated "recognized" by the Texas Education Agency.[1]

The school district is most famous for suspending a student who carried a classmate to the nurse's office at Gateway Middle School. The classmate was suffering a severe asthma attack, was unable to breathe and collapsed out of her desk to the floor. The classroom teacher, Ramona Blanchard, instead of calling emergency services, chose to email the school nurse and wait for a response. After several minutes of inaction, student Anthony Ruelas chose to carry his classmate to the nurses office, potentially saving her life. In response, Blanchard completed a disciplinary form that resulted in Ruelas' suspension. [2]
