North Eastern Education and Library Board

The North Eastern Education and Library Board (NEELB) was an organisation providing education and library services for the north-eastern Local Government Districts of Northern Ireland, in County Antrim and eastern County Londonderry. The board was created by the Education and Libraries (NI) Order 1986,[1] and was established in 1973.

The headquarters of the Board was in County Hall in Ballymena. A Board Centre was also maintained in Antrim and is still maintained today under the North Eastern Region of the Education Authority. The NEELB's Board consisted of 35 members, appointed by the Minister of Education.

The board operated in the following (now former) local government districts: Antrim, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Carrickfergus, Coleraine, Larne, Magherafelt, Moyle and Newtownabbey.

Successor body

On 1 April 2015, the Education Authority assumed the responsibilities of the Board.[2] While the Education Authority is integrating the structures of the five prior Education and Library Boards, the internal structure of the Board is more or less maintained as a Region of the Authority.[3]

Population

The area covered by North Eastern Education and Library Board had a population of 426,284 residents according to the 2011 Northern Ireland census.[4]
