Klebsiella variicola is a member of the genus Klebsiella and was originally identified as a non-pathogenic endophyte in plants.[1] K. variicola is known to associate with a number of different plants including banana trees,[1] sugarcane[2] and has been isolated from the fungal gardens of leaf-cutter ants.[3][4] Additionally, K. variicola strains Bz19[5] and 8917[6] have been isolated from humans and found to be directly involved in pathogenicity. Furthermore, this microorganism has been found to cause bovine mastitis.[7][8]
K. variicola is a microorganism of interest and research potential due to its emerging pathogenic nature in humans and animals following its original discovery as a non-pathogenic plant endophyte.
