Korean animation

Korean animation, known in Korea as aeni (Hangul: 애니), is the production of animated works in South Korea. There are around 120 animation studios in South Korea, which have worked on animated television series including Pucca, Hey Arnold, The Fairly OddParents, The Simpsons, The Boondocks, Ben 10, Family Guy, Phineas and Ferb, The Legend of Korra, and Justice League Unlimited.

History

The 1990s were a period of exponential growth for the Korean animation industry, as they exported services to the United States. However, these services mostly entailed factory-type drawing work, leading to a period of crisis throughout the 2000s.

In the 2010s, home-grown animated feature films such as Leafie (2011) were released to local box office success, and studios such as Rough Draft Korea continued to work on several cartoons overseas. Recently, Korean animation has risen in popularity in Eastern Asia, with the success of the series Pororo the Little Penguin and Origami Warriors.
