Kris Stadsgaard (born 1 August 1985) is a Danish professional football central defender, who currently plays for F.C. Copenhagen. He has previously played for Danish club FC Nordsjælland, Italian club Reggina Calcio, and Rosenborg BK in Norway, winning two Norwegian Premier League championships with Rosenborg. He has played two games for the Denmark national football team.
He is the son of former Danish football referee Knud Stadsgaard.
Club career
Kris Stadsgaard made his Danish Superliga debut for Farum BK in the 2002-03 Danish Superliga season. He stayed with the team as it changed its name to FC Nordsjælland in the Summer 2003. He managed to play his way into the Nordsjælland team in the 2004–05 season, but injury problems made the next two seasons a nightmare.
Reggina
It was therefore surprising when Italian Serie A team Reggina Calcio bought him for 10 million DKK (€1.5 million),[1] including him in their squad for the 2007-08 Serie A season. After the move, Stadsgaard was joining by Mike Tullberg. On 15 September 2007, Stadsgaard made his debut for the club in a 2–1 defeat to Roma. Stadsgaard's move was motivated by fear of the recurrence of his earlier injury problems, which made him relish the fast chance of a lucrative contract.[2] He was never a first choice in Italy, and fell out with club management after refusing to be loaned out to another club.
Rosenborg
Norwegian club Rosenborg BK bought him on 29 March 2008 for approximately 4 million NOK. On 12 April 2008, Stadsgaard made his debut for the club in a 2–1 loss against Fredrikstad. At Rosenborg, Stadsgaard showed himself a quick central defender who is good at the heading game and good at reading the game. Stadsgaard made his debut as a substitute in a Rosenborg away game against Strømsgodset, a match which ended a 3–2 loss. In his time with the club, Rosenborg won the 2009 and 2010 Norwegian Premier League championships, as well as the 2010 Superfinalen trophy.
Málaga CF
On 31 August 2010, he signed a four-year contract with Málaga CF of the Spanish La Liga championship and said there were interests from other club but insisted Málaga was his first choice.[3] After his move he made his La Liga debut on 12 September 2010 against Real Zaragoza.[4] He scored his first goal for Málaga on 16 October 2010, in a 1–4 home loss against Real Madrid. In his first season, Stadsgaard formed a centre defense partnership with Weligton Oliveira, playing 2100 minutes. The following season, Stadsgaard found himself on the bench and managed not to get more playing time following the arrival of Martín Demichelis whom pushed him out of the first team.
Copenhagen
On 23 January 2012 Málaga CF broke the news that they were parting with Stadsgaard in their website.[5] After his release from Spain, Stadsgaard signed for Danish side Copenhagen and it will be first Danish club since 2007.[6]
International career
In 2005, he played two matches for the Denmark under 20 team.
On 12 August 2009 he debuted for the Denmark national football team against Chile. Playing out of position as a left back, he was directly involved in Chile's second goal, only a minute after his entrance.[7] He was not recalled for the national team until November 2010, deputizing for the injured Bo Svensson and Simon Kjær in a friendly game against the Czech Republic.[8] He replaced Mathias Jørgensen in the central defence at half-time, in a game that ultimately ended a 0–0 draw.
