Plot

Berlin, 1956. Caterina Schöllack (Claudia Michelsen), owner of a dance school, has three daughters, of whom two are fulfilling the expectations of the society: Helga (Maria Ehrich) is going to marry attorney Wolfgang von Boost (August Wittgenstein) and the nurse Eva (Emilia Schüle) has planned every detail of her future, including her plan to marry her boss, Professor Fassbender (Heino Ferch). Only Monika (Sonja Gerhardt) fights against the conventions of her time. Her great inspiration to do so is the rock ’n’ roll.[3][4]

Background

Monika's and her sisters' story are exemplary for numerous biographys of a time, where women were expected to marry as soon as possible and their social class was granted by the man on their side. However, the desire for a new female identity and equal rights shaped this generation.

Heike Hempel, editor-in-chief of ZDF: "With Ku’damm 56 we continue our tradition to narrate history in a contemporary way. […] Ku’damm 56 shows women on their path to self-determined sexuality and equal rights."[3]
