Kubo and the Two Strings is an upcoming American 3D stop-motion fantasy action-comedy film produced by Laika for Focus Features. It is being directed by Travis Knight and written by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler. The film stars Art Parkinson, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes and George Takei. The film is set for an August 19, 2016 release.
Plot
The story is set in ancient Japan, where a young boy named Kubo cares for his mother in a village. A spirit from the past turns Kubo's life upside down by re-igniting an age-old vendetta. This causes all sorts of havoc as gods and monsters chase Kubo who, in order to survive, must locate a magical suit of armor once worn by his late father, a legendary Samurai warrior.

Production
On December 22, 2014, Laika and Focus Features announced that the production began on a 3D stop-motion animated film Kubo and the Two Strings, which Laika's CEO Travis Knight would make his directorial debut, based on the script by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler.[3] Knight and Arianne Sutner would produce the film.[3] Voice casting included Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes and Brenda Vaccaro.[1] Dario Marianelli composed the score for the film.[4]
Release
The film is set to be released on August 19, 2016.[1]
