Kunnathur is a panchayat town in Tirupur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was previously under the jurisdiction of the Erode district.

Kunnathur is also known as Air Compressor City, because of the Tractor and Air Compressor workshops in the town.

Demographics

In the 2001 India census,[1] Kunnathur had a population of 7031. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kunnathur has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 64%. In Kunnathur, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Dr. Govindaraj Thangavel included in Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering 2011-2012 (11th Edition), is from Kunnathur.

Places of worship

Kunnathur is home to a historic Lakshmi Narayanan Temple built by Cheras during the 12th century. Other notable places of worship include Akilandeshwarar temple, Aranmanai Mariamman temple, Kunnathur Sivan Temple, the Lakshmi Narayana Temple and the Perumal temple. PonKaliAmman temple (common for 18 villages) is noted for its annual Ther Thiruvizha (Chariot Festival), Maakaali amman temple and sangu mariamman temple.

Shri La Shri Jambukeswaran is Kunnathur Aatheenam; he controls Anuvai Aatheen and Ilaya pattam.

Hospitals

Kunnathur government hospital, Sumathi clinic, Sri Murugan clinic,Subam clinic and Aarogya clinic are located in Kunnathur.

Education

Schools like Kongu Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Karupana Nadar School, Saraswathi Matriculation School and Government Higher Secondary School for Girls are located in Kunnathur. Many Engineering colleges are nearby.

Economy

Banking Facilities: State Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank are located in Kunnathur. The famous textile company Jayavarma (J.V.) Textiles is located near Amman Temple.

Transport

All the buses from Gobi to Coimbatore Pass via Kunnathur and have a 1 minute halt. Every 15–20 minutes there is a bus. Or one can come to Perumanallur and take the buses coming from Erode/Salem to Coimbatore.
