LNZNDRF (pronounced "Lanzendorf") is an American indie rock band formed by The National members and brothers Bryan Devendorf and Scott Devendorf with Ben Lanz (Beirut member and The National collaborator).

History

Brothers Scott and Bryan are both members of the band The National, whom Ben Lanz is a frequent collaborator of, bot in the studio and on the road. The trio formed LNZNDRF in 2011 in Auckland, New Zealand. The project began as way for the three musicians to improvise together and celebrate the spirit of Krautrock and post-punk, which were the first types of music to inspire them when they were growing up. Their self-titled debut was recorded in a church in Cincinnati over two and a half days and the eight songs on the album were improvised and edited down from the 30 plus minute jams. This was meant to help evoke the essence of their expansive, largely improvised live shows.

The album was released by 4AD on February 19, 2016. It was very well received, with publications like The Line of Best Fit remarking "This is not a record for quick thrills, or for sombre introspection; it is an album that creates a rich, layered sonic space, in which it invites its audience to lose themselves awhile." Following the album release, LNZNDRF played a few headline shows in Eruope and the UK and then returned to New York for two sold out shows. They will be playing a few U.S. festivals this summer, including Eaux Claires, which was co-found by National bandmate Aaron Dessner.
