La Lucia is an affluent, predominately white suburb within the Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal area located north of the city of Durban, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. It was named after Lucia Michel. She and her husband Albert Michel founded the sugar cane farm La Lucia. It is best known for it's large, elite private primary and secondary school Crawford College, La Lucia established in 1999. La Lucia has experienced explosive population growth between the 2001 and 2011 census. The population rose 121% from 2,899 to 6,414. Black Africans, Indians and Asians, who were previously confined to neighbouring townships, saw an especially large increase in numbers.[2][3]
