Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) is a technology university in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Nigeria. The university enrolls 25,000 students and employs more than 3,000 people.[1]

History

In 1987, Governor Adetunji Olurin, then the military governor of Oyo State, received to a request by the Governing Council of the Polytechnic Ibadan to establish a state university.[2] He set up a committee that, in 1988, recommended the creation of the university. By March 13, 1990, Nigeria's federal military government accepted the state's request; the edict establishing Oyo State University of Technology was signed on April 23, 1990.[2]

The first vice-chancellor of the university was Professor Olusegun Ladimeji Oke. Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola became the first chancellor in January 1991. The first academic session began on October 19, 1990. A total of 436 candidates enrolled in four faculties: Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Management Sciences, and Pure and Applied Sciences. A College of Health Sciences was established a year later.[2]

The name of the university was changed to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology after the separation of Osun State from Oyo State.[2]

Campus and academics

The university enrolls nearly 20,000 students in six faculties and a college.[2] For two consecutive seasons, in 2003 and 2004, the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) rated LAUTECH as the best state university in Nigeria.[2]

The main campus is in Ogbomosho. This campus is the site of the university's administration, as well as home to five faculties and the post-graduate school.[3] Fields of study include pure and applied science, medicine, agriculture, engineering and technology, and environmental science.

Another campus is located in Osogbo, home to the College of Health Sciences. Faculties in medicine and surgery, medical laboratory technology and nursing are housed there.[3]

Conflict

The ownership of LAUTECH has always been a source of conflict between the two-owner states (Oyo State[4] and Osun State[5]) especially after Osun State acquired her own university. The government of Oyo State wants Osun to transfer full ownership of the University to them while the other party disagrees.[6] This conflict grew intense in 2010 under the administrations of ex-Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State and his former counterpart ex-Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State.[7] The feud which was suspected to have been ignited by political interests[8] was resolved eventually after series of intervention by notable political icons and the National Universities Commission in Nigeria.[9] Today, the school is still controlled by the governments of both Oyo and Osun States and admission priorities are given to indigenes of both states in the Southwest of Nigeria.
