Lamar State CollegePort Arthur is a community college located in Port Arthur, Texas, United States. The college has 2,075 students.[1]

History

The historical origins of LSC-PA date back to 1909 when John W. Gates, the founder of what would become Texaco organized the Port Arthur Business College. Initially a private institution, the college became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1911 and was renamed to the Port Arthur Collegiate Institute. After further name changes the college merged with Lamar University in 1974 and became the Lamar University Extension Center at Port Arthur. In two years, the school was once again renamed to Lamar University at Port Arthur. In 1985, the Texas Senate passed a bill to grant the institution more autonomy, but it would take ten years for the campus to be granted recognition as a constituent school of the Texas State University System. With this recognition, the school was designated as Lamar State College–Port Arthur.
