Larrissa Miller (born 12 July 1992) is an Australian Artistic Gymnast, who specialises on the Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise. She made her Australian Senior National Championship debut in 2008, and went on to compete at the World Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Miller was then selected for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and represented Australia in Floor Finals and Team Finals at the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, China. She finished 6th in the world in Floor Finals and the Australian Team finished 7th in the Team Finals Competition.
Personal
Miller was born on 12 July 1992 in Moranbah,[1] and is originally from country Queensland. When she was seven years old, she moved to Brisbane to train at the Queensland Academy of Sport in gymnastics.[2]
After her Olympic debut, Miller took some time out of the gym. She resumed her Gymnastics career in November 2014 at Waverley Gymnatics Centre in Melbourne, Victoria.
In mid 2015, Miller broke her silence on being sexually abused by an extended family member between the ages of 5 & 16. She is an advocate & ambassador for Bravehearts Inc. Bravehearts is an Australian non-profit organisation deal with all facets of Child Sexual Assault.
Artistic gymnastics
Miller is a Women's Artistic Gymnast[1] who specialises in the Uneven Bars,[3][4] and Floor Exercise.[1][4] She started in the sport when she was five years old at Moranbah Gymnastics Club where she was coached by Julie Hands. She was later affiliated with the Mackay Gymnastics Club. In 2012, she was on scholarship with the Queensland Academy of Sport, where she was coached by Vladimir and Irina Joura.
Miller made her Australian Senior National Championships debut in 2008, where she finished 12th in the All Around. In 2009, she finished 7th Overall and 2nd on the Uneven Bars.[5]
Miller competed in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 World Championships.[5] At the 2009 World Championships in London, she finished 5th in the Uneven Bars Qualification and went on to finish 7th in the Finals.[1][5] At the 2010 Pacific Rim Championships, she finished 3rd in the Team Event, 8th on the Uneven Bars, and 19th in the All Around Competition.[1]
As a member of the 2012 Australian National Team, Miller was coached by national coach Peggy Liddick and personal coach Vladimir Joura.[2][3] In mid-June 2012, she was one of 12 Australian gymnasts vying to earn a final spot on the Olympic Team at a training camp held at the Australian Institute of Sport.[6][7] She was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics in Women's Artistic Gymnastics.[2][3][4][8][9] She was selected to compete in the Women's Team Event,[9] Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise.[5] Her Olympic training preparations included learning how to deal with flash photography with strobe lighting used at practice, and being exposed to distracting noises.[2][10]
Miller attended the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, competing for Australia in the Woman's Artistic Gymnastics competition. She claimed a silver on Uneven Bars, only being beaten by British gymnast Rebecca Downie, and helped her Australian Team earn a silver in the Team Final Competition. Later that year, Miller competed in the 2014 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Nanning, China, where she qualified for the Floor Final in 8th place. Miller performed a solid routine, having no major steps and overall clean execution, and she finished in 6th place.[11]
