Leam Lane Estate

Leam Lane Estate in Gateshead is made up solely of council-built accommodation, though most of the properties are now privately owned. Its main shopping area, Fewster Square, boasts two convenience stores, a frozen foods shop, a DIY shop, a hairdressers, library, community centre, Post Office and medical centre.

Leam Lane Estate was built in the 1950s.

It has a number of local pubs including, The Eagle, The Durham Ranger, The Leam Lane Working Men's Club and The Deuchars Arms.

On the estate is the Oliver Henderson Park which includes a play area, a lake, a skateboard park and a bowling green. It also has a large area where local football teams can be seen practising their skills. [1]

The estate has four primary schools: Roman Road, Colegate, Saint Augustine's and Lingey House. It has one Secondary School, situated on the border of Leam Lane and Heworth and is named Heworth Grange Comprehensive School.

The Estate is bordered by Springwell Estate, Heworth, High Lanes, Wardley and Windy Nook.

Most of Leam Lane Estate is in the NE10 Postcode group, with NE9 covering the upper side of Leam Lane at the Springwell border. It is within the (0191) Area Code and has telephone numbers beginning with 440, 469 and 438

Actress Jill Halfpenny and professional footballer Chris Waddle both lived in the Leam Lane estate.

The world's first online home shopping took place on the estate when resident Mrs Jane Snowball bought an item from a local Tesco supermarket in May 1984, by using her television set and remote control. The scheme had been developed by Newcastle University lecturer Ross Davies in conjunction with Rediffusion.[2]

Leam Lane is within the Gateshead council ward of Wardley and Leam Lane. Wardley is situated northeast of Leam Lane.
