The Leona Group
The Leona Group (TLG) was founded in 1996 in Michigan by Dr. William Coats, a nationally-recognized leader in education reform. The educational organization now operates 66 charter school campuses in Arizona, Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, and embraces as a founding principle the belief that all children can learn, regardless of ethnicity or economic or educational disadvantage. This ideal drives The Leona Group’s commitment to excellence in elementary, middle and high school classrooms across the country.
Cesar Chavez Academy in Detroit, Michigan, was the first charter school to partner with The Leona Group, initially serving students in grades K-5. The school since has grown to serve more than 2,000 students in grades pre-K through 12 on five Detroit campuses. Cesar Chavez Academy is now a top-performing public school in Detroit.
With a proven educational track record in Michigan, The Leona Group next sought to make a difference in Arizona, a state demonstrating a tremendous need for a new kind of public school. In 1997, The Leona Group created its Arizona division and opened five charter high schools in the metro-Phoenix area. In 2000, The Leona Group relocated its corporate headquarters to Phoenix.
In 2001, The Leona Group broadened its reach to serve students in Ohio, beginning with Eagle Academy, which opened in Toledo. In 2002, three additional Leona Group schools opened in Toledo, along with the organization’s first school in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Leona Group has since expanded its operations in Arizona, and grown to support children through charter school initiatives in Florida.
Today, The Leona Group employs more than 2,200 team members across the country, working to improve the lives of children in high-need urban areas, as well as those facing fiscal and academic challenges.
The company is named for a student named Leona, who grew up in a small town in Ohio during the early part of the 20th century. Leona was a hard-working young woman who loved school and learning, but was limited in achieving an advanced education because of restrictions experienced by women of the era. Leona continues to symbolize the organization’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for young people across the country.
