Li-ion Motors sells custom-made vehicles for customers around the world. Li-ion Motors is engaged in converting scooters, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, cars, trucks and homes to use zero-emission lithium-ion batteries.[1]
History
Li-ion Motors Corp. was incorporated in the State of Nevada on April 12, 2000. Earlier the company was known as Hybrid Technologies then EV Innovations and later the name changed to Li-ion Motors Corp. The research and development plant as well as the production facility of the corporation is located in Mooresville, North Carolina and looks much the way any auto factory should look. The Company selected Mooresville for production as it is the home city for many NASCAR teams and has an exceptional labor pool for the work Li-ion Motors does. As many motors are being pulled out of cars as are being put in here. For cars such as the Crossfire and PT Cruiser, the motor and other systems are stripped out and sold back to the automaker or others. By building off existing models, Li-ion Motors can focus on the critical part of any electric car — the battery system.
By March 2006, the company entered into a Space Act Agreement with the Kennedy Space Center ("KSC") of NASA to determine the utility of lithium powered fleet vehicles produced by Li-ion Motors Corp. NASA Kennedy Space Center selected numerous electric vehicle of Li-ion Motors to be used in NASA KSC fleet includes high performance all terrain vehicle as part of Li-ion Motors corp. military line, electric PT cruiser and Lithium Smart Car. In the month of May in the same year, Li-ion Motors has contracted with the Federal government of the United States and installed an Executive Due Diligence Committee. The company announced an increase of over 47% in short positions over a 25-day trading period. In A third party listing applications on other exchanges, has reported to the Board with that there is a short position of 501,477 shares valued at $5,415,952 as at May 5, 2006. DTC reports show a 6,767,552 share position and ADP Range Report a 7,269,029 share position. Executive Due Diligence Committee requested all the shareholders holding positions at Penson Financial Services to deliver their shares. Earlier in the month of April, Penson Financial Services maintained a negative stock position of 68,326 shares for one week but in the month of May, according to Material Request Report, Penson showed 81 shareholders.
Li-ion Motors expanded into military contracts and creation of a military division. The company collaborated with United States Military to produce a high output, all lithium reconnaissance vehicles (CERV). The vehicles were produced for advanced operations testing & command review.
On May 16, 2007, Li-ion Motors vehicles and their relationship with NASA was featured to international audience via Modern Marvels channel.
In September 2007, Li-ion Motors converted a PT Cruiser which was selected for advanced roadside air quality monitoring by a federal agency contractor. The company was awarded a contract of working with ARCADIS for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for producing highly advanced lithium PT Cruiser model. This vehicle was equipped with advanced technologies onboard rapid charger system, was selected due to its zero-emissions, high-speed capacity, charge time, and overall functionality for the EPA’s Near-Road Air Quality Study. The vehicle was used by EPA’s Office of Research & Development (ORD) to study the air pollutant concentrations along with major roadways that was of a great concern to the health of people working at nearby places. The vehicle was fitted with air quality measurement instruments to check the pollution as it gives the ability to evaluate the major factors impacting near- road air quality, such as traffic levels, meteorological conditions, and surrounding topography. Li-ion Motors PT is one of the world’s only production model high-speed electric vehicles and was originally developed as a part of SPACE ACT Agreement with NASA.
In October 2007, Li-ion Motors smart car was the "Once in a Life Time" package offered to Sam's Club members in the 2007 holiday catalog. The package was offered for $35,000. This package included a VIP trip to KSP NASA to witness a shuttle launch first-hand.
In April 2008, Li-ion Motors entered into a license agreement with Superlattice Power providing for their license to SPI of their patent applications and technologies for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and other applications. Under the license agreement, Li-ion Motors has the right to purchase lithium-ion batteries from SPI, and lithium-ion batteries shall be supplied in preference to, and on a priority basis, before other customers of SPI. Li-ion Motors cost for lithium-ion batteries purchased from SPI shall be SPI’s actual manufacturing costs for such batteries.
Li-ion Motors planned in December 2009 to start a new manufacturing unit in Rutherford County, NC. For this manufacturing unit Li-ion Motors anticipated receiving $13 million in concessions and credits that would included a 145,000-square-foot (13,500 m2) manufacturing facility, with an option of a 400,000-square-foot (37,000 m2) manufacturing facility for future expansion. Li-ion Motors plans to begin working with Isothermal Community College to develop a world class training program for the repair and manufacturing of electric vehicles. The company would employ about 250 people in the new manufacturing plant.
IN February 2010, the company changed its name from EV Innovation Inc. to Li-ion Motors Corp. Then in March, LMCO participated with its newly manufactured – LiV Wave in long distance testing of the WAVE car for the Progressive Auto Insurance X-Prize at the Michigan International Speedway. LMCO’s car was in the top 22 teams.
Li-ion Motors entered into a licensed agreement a Canadian corporation, whereby the Canadian corporation may market and manufacture Li-ion Motors vehicles independently and will pay a total valued at $1 million CDN upon completion of a valuation. The Canadian corporation will also pay a research and development fee of $500,000 to Li-ion Motors.
Strategy
Li- ion Motors wants people to start thinking of battery power as a kind of high-end option, like a convertible top or a navigation system. Li-ion Motors Corp has a belief that the automobile is about to start morphing into the cars and trucks of the future. Not only will the fuel or energy source be changing as well as the drive train and there will be a total change in the actual structure and component materials that make up the vehicle itself.
The company is responsible for transforming the already efficient MINI into a zero-emissions electric vehicle. Li-ion Motors engineers remove the internal combustion engines from cars such as the Chrysler Crossfire, PT Cruiser, Smart for-two, and the MINI, and replace them with electric motors.
Rewards
Li-ion Motors entered the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, a $10 million competition to inspire a new generation of viable, super efficient vehicles. Li-ion Motors entry, the Wave II, passed the initial Shakedown review with a perfect scorecard and is one of the remaining 40 teams that will be competing at the Michigan International Speedway.[2] The Wave II then passed the Knockout efficiency tests in June with the highest posted efficiency during the contest (182.3 MPGe). One of only 15 remaining competitors, at the Finals in July it also posted the highest efficiency in its class (171.4 MPGe). Li-ion Motors also featured in news channels and magazines like Fox News channel,[3] WBTV News,[4] 12 WXII NEWS,[5] WBAL11 News,[6] 42K-Eyes News,[7] Forbes.com [8]
Li-ion Motors PT cruiser was awarded a contract by ARCADIS, a Contractor to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). LMCO’s electric vehicle was selected due to its zero-emissions, high-speed capacity, charge time, and overall functionality for the EPA’s Near-Road Air Quality Study to evaluate air pollutant concentrations alongside major roadways, which may be a health concern to people living and working nearby.
Li-ion Motors vehicles and their relationship with NASA was featured to international audience via award winning History Channel series Modern Marvels on May 16, 2007.
